Question by Not in Pain: Just neutered my puppy, just wondering how long I should wait to start group obedience classes?
I neutered my 6 month old lab yesterday and I was wondering how long I should wait to begin a puppy obedience class. I had anticipated starting him with a class that starts 7 days after his surgery but I don’t know if I should wait. The class is one night per week for an hour. Thanks for any input.

He should be fine in 7 days. I would sign up if you think he is having a problem just go home early or take a break. At least then you are in the set of lessons.

Pets should be prevented from jumping, running, playing rough or any HIGH energy/movement activities for 12 to 14 days. That is the typical healing period and when sutures (if any) can be removed. Any surgery that involves cutting muscle and going into a cavity should be able to rest and heal for at least 2 weeks. If not, sites can re-open and you don’t want to see what happens when parts come out from a surgery site and animals have access to them. They can cause tearing, opening, infection, pain, seroma, lots of complications that are hard to stop and fix once started. Even a one hour class once a week can cause problems. Lots of puppies, new place, new people, lots of distractions = lots of energy and play and jumping. Won’t end well and typically costs 2 to 3 times for than the original surgery to disinfect and repair what happens on an emergency basis. Better off waiting and healing properly than going and starting a bad cascade of problems.Good luck keeping your kid quiet, its hard but better in the end!!

    you should wait
the stitches either don’t dissolve or get removed for 7-10 days and still needs another week to heal I would wait at least 3-4 weeks after surgery
